Update Announcement: Login 2.0

The Login extension was born from many requests for providing a solution to allow the user to login to their user account. One was not provided initially because there are so many great free plugins which already offer this feature for WordPress sites. And so the Login extension was born. The feature set of Login was very basic. It provided a login widget which would only display on the entry profile detail/profile view, a login content block and shortcode which could be used in the require login message and that was it. This was intentional as I wanted it to be simple and easy to use. That said, it was often requested, if not expressed in these exact words, that you wanted a more full featured widget and shortcode and that is exactly what Login 2.0 is bringing to you.

Here’s an overview of the features:

The widget is no longer limited to just the entry profile/detail view, though there is an option to enable it.

There are separate configuration options for the widget for when the user is logged in and logged out.

When the user is logged out you have the option to display, or not, the “Remember me” checkbox and the “Lost Password” link. And, if you have the “Anyone can register” option enabled in the WordPress settings you have the option to display the “Register” link.

The fun new options are for when the user is logged in. The widget title can be customized with their user name or first and last name. You can optionally choose to display the user’s Gravatar and even add your own custom links.

Login also has basic support for both bbPress and BuddyPress. If one or both of those plugins are installed and active on your site, you’ll be able to add custom links to their user profile pages.

And lastly, there have been a ton of actions and filters that other plugins can hook into to add additional options and features. The first plugin to take advantage that will be the Link extension. The next major update to Link, which was developed in tandem with Login, features the ability to easily add the “View My Directory Entry” link, the “Edit My Directory Entry” link and added support for displaying the entry logo or photo.

All in all, this is a major update which I hope you find useful!
